A LESSON FOR ALL

Mary is an advocate, who is able to save all

St. Andrew of Crete says, “The Queen of Heaven is so gracious and liberal that she recompenses her servants with the greatest munificence for the most trifling devotion.”

But we need to adhere to Her two important conditions.

·         Our soul should be free from sin and impurity when we offer Her our devotion.  Or else She would address us, as how she dealt with an irreverent soldier, says St. Peter Celestine.

There was this soldier who performed everyday some devotion in honor of our Lady. One day he was very hungry, when Mary appeared to him. She offered him the choicest and delicious meat all in a filthy plate. Though the meat looked appetizing, yet the sight of the filthy plate could not bring him to taste it.

“I am the Mother of God,” She said “and I have come to satisfy your hunger.”

“But, O Lady,” he replied, “I cannot eat from such a dirty plate.”

“And how,” responded Mary, “can you expect Me to acknowledge your devotion, arising from your soul, which is so tarnished with sin.”

The soldier realizing the truth got converted and became a hermit.

Thirty years later, at his death bed, the Blessed Virgin appeared and took him to Heaven.

The condition translates into such as that one must live without sin, or at least have the desire to forsake it then, Blessed Mother will surely help them.

 Whereas, if they continue sinning, on the hope that Mary will save them, he would be considered unfit, unworthy and incapable of Her divine Protection.

·         The second condition: Perseverance in our devotion towards our Mother Mary is essential.

St. Bernard highlights, “Perseverance alone will merit a crown.”

When he was dying, his Jesuit companions crowded the young St. John Bachmans, to solicit him on the most pleasing devotion that they could perform to our Lady; to which the saint replied, “Any devotion, however small, provided it is constant.”

Anyone who is constant in his devotion to Mary, will be Blessed in his confidence and obtain all that he desires.

But as no one is certain of their perseverance, no one before death can be certain of their salvation either. 

ARE THEY HAPPY

The Holy Bible says, “A stubborn person will be burdened down with troubles. (Sirach 3:27)

Blessed by God’s grace are those who capable to view all the events and incidents of this small world and daily life through the spiritual aspect cause that’s God’s perceptive of our actions. Those who perceive those tearful days of life as a spiritual carnival, the acceptance of the lost days as God’s plan and purpose and the deep wounds as the drops of anointing oil of comfort achieve immense success in their life.

A lady approaching me for prayer sighed deeply as she murmured her petition, “Dear Sister, I have nobody and am all alone. My husband passed away when my children were very young. Children now are grown up, settled and busy in their world.  They have no time to visit me or inquire about my whereabouts. They send me more than enough money, not knowing that my happiness and comfort does not lie in it. Can you pray to your God to gift my remaining days to my children and to call me to His land.”  

Her request moved my heart.

The Holy Bible says, “Honor your father with all your heart, and never forget how your mother suffered when you were born. Remember that you owe your life to them. How can you ever repay them for all they have done for you?” (Sirach 7:27-28)

How soon do we forget the teachings of God our Father, who honor and care every parent individually? How often we forget His instruction to us children, to visualize and consider parents as our own eyes?

A visit to any old age homes or a peep into verandah of most homes highlights the sight of old parents, lonely and unhappy, awaiting the arrival of their own children, all desiring for few words of comfort and acceptance.  All their anxiety face and tearful eyes yearn patiently to get a glimpse of their dear children.

Some parents have more deadly fate. They do no longer wish to see the cruel and frustrated face of their children.  Their parenting  is questioned every now and then, when their children who they brought up with so much love , accuse and corrects them not considering  their sacrifices.  Arguments and accusations are shot down at parents who get depressed, adding more meaninglessness to their sunset phase.  A sight so heart breaking but so common these days.

Let us turn to the Gospel of St. John. In the scripture we hear a voice saying to Jesus, “I have no one.” Read it on and we learn about the man who was ill for 38 years , lying helpless with no one to help. (John 5)

Dear ones do not just consider the incident as a mere miracle. Through this chapter, may the Word of God help you listen to the cry of your parents who broke their life to pieces for your sake, your bright future.

Question yourself, “What all have I rejected for my parents? Have I given up anything for their welfare and comfort?

Unless you return their favor, seven times, it will not be counted in the shore of blessings, because the Holy Bible says, “Respect your father and your mother, as I, the Lord your God, command you, so that all may go well with you and so that you may live a long time in the land I am giving you.” (Deu. 5:16)

Dear ones, the wounds will not be healed by verbal comfort and prayers. Along with it, it is mandatory  to add a loving approach, compassionate look, merciful fondle and a heartfelt embrace. Above all, it is utmost necessary to have a safe and sound place and the feel of belonging to it.

By denying them of their above rights and packing them off to old age home, throwing them out forcibly to the nearby shed etc, in their sunset phase will shake the foundation of your own family, as the Holy Bible again mentions, “when parents give their blessing, they give strength to their children’s home, but when they curse their children, they destroy the very foundations.” (Sirach 3:9)

If you have forsaken your parents, for your very own selfish motives, pleasure and convenience and denied and stripped them off the due care and protection they ought to receive,  and  their tears reach the altar of the Most High God, remember as per God’s Law you are indebted to them and a price has to be paid for every account that God holds you responsible.

When you flourish in life, do not forget to look into the account book of God, opened for you, that clearly indicates the struggles and sacrifice they carried on their shoulders and the anxiety in their heart to bring you up.  They have tuned you to believe, to live and love, to forgive and forget, to be polite and accept everything,; if you  such have parental upbringing experience, do praise and thank God now without further delay.

Instead of stretching out your money bags towards them or feed them out of duty or visit them once or twice a year to delight them and others; open your hearts truly, give them a better position in your family and reside them in your heart.  It is good to remember, that there are many indebted loving stories within you to share with them and to make their soul peaceful at the same time making your life secured.

Your shoulder bears the very genuine fact of this parental debt from God, who wants us to be blessed by the fruits of His children. They loved you more than their life and everything in it, and lifted their hands to God always for your sake.

Let us utter a Living word to them not forgetting the very fact that parents are the visible God of our life.

If they have completed their journey and passed away, always remember to pray and offer the sacrifice for the salvation of their soul.

“Never seek honor for yourself at your father’s expense; it is not to your credit if he is dishonored. Your own honor comes from the respect that you show to your father. If children do not honor their mothers, it is their own disgrace. My son, take care of your father when he grows old; give him no cause for worry as long as he lives. Be sympathetic even if his mind fails him; don’t look down on him just because you are strong and healthy. The Lord will not forget the kindness you showed to your father; it will help you to make up for your sins. When you are in trouble, the Lord will remember your kindness and will help you;  your sins will melt away like frost in warm sunshine. Whoever abandons his parents or gives them cause for anger may as well be cursing the Lord; he is already under the Lord’s curse. (Sirach 3:10-16)

LIFE IN GOD’S SERVICE

Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold onto what is good. Love one another warmly as Christian brothers, and be eager to show respect for one another. Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion. Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles,  and pray at all times. Share your belongings with your needy fellow-Christians, and open your homes to strangers.

Ask God to bless those who persecute you—yes, ask Him to bless, not to curse. Be happy with those who are happy, weep with those who weep. Have the same concern for everyone. Do not be proud, but accept humble duties. Do not think of yourselves as wise.

If someone has done you wrong, do not repay him with a wrong. Try to do what everyone considers to be good. Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody. Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God’s anger do it. For the Scripture says, “I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord.” Instead, as the Scripture says: “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give me a drink; for by doing this you will make him burn with shame.” Do not let evil defeat you; instead, conquer evil with good.  (Romans 12:9-21)

A PRAYER FOR HELP

From the depths of my despair, I call to you my Lord,

Hear, my cry, O Lord;

Listen to my call for help!

If you kept a reward of our sins,

who could escape being condemned?

But you forgive us,

so that we should stand in awe of you.

I wait eagerly for the Lord’s help,

And in His word I trust

I wait for the Lord

more eagerly than watchmen wait for the dawn.

Israel, trust in the Lord,

because His love is constant

and He is always willing to save.

He will save His people Israel

from all their sins.

THE BOOK OF ESTHER

ESTHER’S PRAYER

Queen Esther, in deep agony, turned to the Lord.  She took off her splendid robes and put on garments of mourning and grief.  Instead of her rich perfume she put ashes and dung on her head.  She did all she could to destroy any dignity in her appearance.  She let her tangled and uncombed hair hang down over her body that she had always taken such care to beautify.  She prayed to the Lord God of Israel, “My Lord and King, only you are God.  I am all alone, and I have no one to turn to but You.  Help me! I am about to risk myself.  O Lord, as long as I can remember, my family has told me how You chose Israel from all the nations and how in ancient times you singled out our ancestors to be Your people for ever.  You have kept all your promises to them.”

“But we sinned against You.  You handed us over to our enemies, because we worshipped their gods.  We deserved your punishment, O Lord.  But our enemies are no longer satisfied just to see us in slavery.  They have made a solemn promise to their idols not only to destroy the people, who praise You, but to do away with Your Law and to remove forever the glory of Your house and Altar.  They want the whole world to praise worthless idols and stand in awe of mortal kings forever. “

“Lord, these gods are nothing, do not surrender Your power to them or give our enemies the chance to laugh at our downfall.  Instead, turn their evil plans against them and make an example of that man who first planned our destruction. “

“Remember us, O Lord. Come to us in this time of trouble.  Give me courage, King of all gods and rulers over all earthly powers.  Give me the right words to say, when I go in to face Xerxes, that savage lion.  Change his heart so that he will turn against Haman our enemy, and destroy him and his gang.  Come, to our rescue O Lord.  Help me I am all alone, and I have no one to turn to but You.”

“You know everything, Lord.  You know that I hate the honour I receive from these Gentiles.  I detest the thought of having sex with any of these uncircumcised heathen.  But you know that I have no choice.  I hate the crown I have to wear as queen on official occasions.  I never wear it unless I have to.  It is as disgusting as last month’s rag.  I refuse to eat at Haman’s table or honor the king by attending his parties, and I have never drunk any of the wine dedicated to his gods.  Since I came here, the only thing that has brought me joy is my worship of you, Lord God of Abraham.

“Almighty God, listen to the prayer of your people.  Rescue us from these evil men, and take away my fear.”

This is the Word of the Lord

TRUE HAPPINESS

After John had been put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee and preached the Good News from God. “The right time has come,” He said, “and the Kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News! ”   

His courteous behavior, humility and a speech filled with knowledge drew every soul to Him except those few whose behavior was laden with jealousy and ego. It’s a genuine truth throughout the Gospel that those who gathered to meet and listen to Jesus, were attracted towards Him.

Let’s take the example of Nathanael.

Nathanael on meeting Jesus for the first time exclaimed, “You are the Son of God.”  Jesus said, “Yes, you believe in Me, and you will see greater things.”  The spark of knowledge from Christ enlightens the one who met Him, encourages them to speak the truth confidently and fearlessly as  Joy of the truth overflows from their heart.

Let us today review how Lord Jesus called His disciples and their response to His call.

“As Lord Jesus walked along the shore of Lake Galilee, He saw two brothers who were fishermen, Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew, catching fish in the lake with a net.  Jesus said to them, “Come with Me, and I will teach you to catch men.”  At once they left their nets and went with Him.

 He went on and saw two other brothers James and John, the sons of Zebedee.  They were in their boat with their father Zebedee, getting their nets ready.  Jesus called them, and at once they left the boat and their father and went with him.    (Matt 4)

As He walked along, He saw a tax collector, Levi, son of Alphaeus sitting in his office.  Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”  Levi got up and followed him. (Mark 2)

We can observe the great obedience of those poor people. On receiving the call, forgetting themselves, they humbly obeyed Jesus who called them and set out to follow Him. Nothing stopped them; not even the thoughts of their family and future could restrain them.

Jesus went all over Galilee as a great light, comfort and a new life to those who lived in dark land of death.  Soon He became well known by all and large crowds followed Him from different towns.  He sat on a hill top and began to teach them in a friendly way regarding the true joy of the Kingdom.

“Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor;

The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them!

“Happy are those who mourn;

God will comfort them!

“Happy are those who are humble;

They will receive what God has promised!

“Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires;

God will satisfy them fully!

“Happy are those who are merciful to others;

God will be merciful to them!

“Happy are the pure in heart;

They will see God!

“Happy are those who work for peace;

God will call them His children!

“Happy are those who are persecuted because

they do what God requires;

The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them!

Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are My followers. Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted.

No one can deny how great is the secret of our religion:

He appeared in human form,

Was shown to be right by the Spirit,

and was seen by angels.

He was preached among the nations,

was believed in throughout the world,

and was taken up to Heaven.

(1 Timothy 3:16)

CHRISTEEN SECTION

DO YOU WISH TO BE A GOOD SAMARITAN

A warm welcome to all the little children of Christ Jesus. 

The story of Ben-hur unfolds during those days when Jesus was staying in Jerusalem, preaching the Kingdom of God and healing the sick and afflicted. The story tells us how the meeting with Jesus Christ transforms the life of Ben-hur.

Judah Ben-hur, a wealthy Jewish prince lived his mother Miriam and younger sister, Tirzah.  

Ben-hur had a childhood friend Messala, who was Roman and later goes on to become his foe. Years later, Messala returns to his hometown as an ambitious commanding officer of the Roman Governor. Both of them realize that they have different views about life and religion.

One day when the Governor was out to visit his Kingdom in a grand military parade, a loose tile from the corner of Ben-Hur’s house accidently strikes him and throws him out of his horse. 

Messala, ambitious as he was, falsely accuses Ben-hur and his family for attempting to assassinate the Governor. Though they are not found guilty, his mother and sister are imprisoned while Ben-hur is sent to the Roman galley’s for life.

On his way to forced slavery in the galley, a thirsty Ben-hur  first encounters Jesus as a stranger who, offers him water and encouragement.

As the story unfolds, we read how Ben-hur is saved from the galley, often hears about Jesus from those around him. Soon the false news of his mother and sister’ death while in prison reaches him.

As he becomes wealthy again, he returns to his home town to visit Messsala to seek revenge for his family. There again he comes across the man who had given him water years ago. He notices that Jesus chose who were lowly and deprived as His disciples. Though he had heard before, here right now he witnessed Jesus performing miracles and healing all the sick who had approached Him. Ben-Hur becomes his one of his followers.

Soon he is joyful to know that his family is still alive, but his happiness is short-lived when he sees that due to long years in prison, both his mother and sister contracted leprosy. He then sets out to seek Jesus, so that they too could be healed.

But his search ends at the trial of Jesus before Pontius Pilate and later witness the Crucifixion. The heart wrenching sight of Jesus carrying the wooden heavy cross, being beaten by soldiers moved him to tears. Standing there he reviewed the life of Jesus, the man who had done no wrong to anyone, yet today some of his own followers and those whom he had healed had wanted him to be put to death.  Jesus suffered for all and forgave all those who hurt him.

Soon Ben-hur realized that Christ’s life stands a different goal than revenge.  Inspired by the love, life, passion of Jesus, he detest his revenge, and sets his eyes on the greater Kingdom of God. This time encouraged by Jesus, true and greater glory, he returns to his family, promising to dedicate the rest of his life to Jesus’ teaching.

On meeting them, it dawned on him that even at the time of His utmost pain, Jesus made sure that no one went back empty handed from His presence. Even though Ben-Hur, could not say his worry to the Lord, yet He who knew the hearts of all, knew how and why Ben-Hur reached there. As a parting gift, the Lord had healed Miriam and Tirzah.

All they could do before the Mighty Healer was to glorify and thank Him.

Dear children, the Lord sees all your little needs and pain.  Lord Jesus has more concern for our desires than we ourselves have.  Even while dying on the cross, he fulfilled the desire of his Ben-hur.   Ben-hur too loved Lord Jesus more than his own intention.  Therefore by not being interested in our own needs.  Let us extend a helping hand towards the needy ones. 

Let us pray to Lord to grant us His good qualities and to fill us with His courage and power.

THE VIRTUES OF BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Part II

You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart. (Matthew 22:3)

“O Virgin! Who taught you to please God by virginity and to lead an angel’s life here on earth?” asked St. Bernard to the Holy Mary.

God chose this most pure Virgin as His Mother so that she might be an example of CHASTITY to all.  Not only did Our Mother remain a Virgin throughout, but through her St. Joseph too preserved his virginity. St. Ambrose calls her the standard - bearer of virginity.

St. Gregory of Tours affirms that the Holy Mary fasted throughout Her life for grace so that gluttony cannot subsist together. 

The Most Holy Mary reveals to St. Elizabeth of Hungary, “‘No virtues can abide in us without effort and continual prayer’.

 

O Most Loving Redeemer grant us to learn from You to despise the things of this world, and just as you were, to be satisfied in our poverty on earth. 

“You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, rich as He was; He made Himself poor for your sake in order to make you rich by means of His Poverty.”  (2 Cor. 9) 

 A rich young man approached asking Jesus, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to receive eternal life?”  The Lord replied, “…..go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor and you will have riches in heaven, then come and follow Me.” (Matthew 19) 

Mary’s respect for poverty is evident when she accepts God’s will and agrees in marriage to St. Joseph, a poor carpenter. Enriched with all heavenly blessings, she still chose to live poor and also die poor.

He who loves the possessions of this world, can never suit and gain  the title of saint. The virtue of poverty lies in loving the hardships and discomforts attached to it.

So let’s abandon our grumpy faces set our eyes on our Savior and His Mother, and console our troubled hearts, to seek comfort from Them, who suffered and went through all this and is an example for us to enable us to detach ourselves from the passions and selfishness of this World.

Thus with more space in our heart, lets mediate. Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of God.  (Matthew 5:3).  Such people desire nothing but God and discover their paradise on earth.

Virgin Mary declared that God was pleased with her OBEDIENCE when she said, “He has regarded the humility of His handmaid.”

Eve by her disobedience swept in death of herself and the entire human race, while Virgin Mary, free from Original Sin, by her obedience bloomed God’s Salvation on herself and the entire mankind.

Her obedience in all things pleased God and was more ideal than all saints. The obedience she radiated reached the highest perfection, when she submitted herself and offered Her Son to death for the Divine Will. This still continues to amaze many, including saints, to draw inspiration and strength even during the darkest hours of life.

 Let us intercede with Her to Lord Jesus to obtain such obedience for us to be faithful in God’s will.

Blessed Virgin Mary is the role model for all virtues, but Her Virtue of PATIENCE is noteworthy.  We have already seen her sorrows, sufferings and patience in the flight of her journey to Egypt, the hidden life in Nazareth, during her presence at the crucifixion.  When life’s cross weigh heavily on us, let us have recourse to Mary who is called the Comforter of the afflicted and the Remedy for all sorrows of the heart. Mary who was innocent yet suffered with much patience.

Christ Jesus our Savior taught us to pray fervently (Luke 18).  Mary is the only one on earth who practiced the Lord’s PRAYER in perfect manner. 

Mary revealed to St. Elizabeth of Hungary that she always rose at midnight and went before the altar of the Temple to offer her supplications.  After the Resurrection and the Ascension it is said that she frequently visited the places of our Lord’s Nativity, Passion and the Sepulcher.  She prayed with the greatest recollection of Spirit. 

Never before was there anyone like Mary nor will there be  anyone like her who pleased God. 

Our Blessed Virgin Mary told St. Jane -which is a very pleasing practice to her - to recite ten ‘Hail Mary’ in honor of her ten virtues.

Act for the day

Let us offer a Holy Rosary to our Mother, to grant us the grace to honor her virtues.

HOW GOOD IT IS TO BE HERE

The Holy Bible says, “Of course, my brothers, I really do not think that I have already won it; one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what is ahead.” (Phil 3:13)

When we realize that our pursuit after perishable pleasures which gifted us unhealed wounds, cruel memories of guilt, past buried burning stories and unforgettable incidents, often takes away our peace and sleep.  How long have you been on sleeping pills or intoxicants?  How long has it been since you had a peaceful meal with your beloved ones?

Knowingly or unexpectedly when the True Light enters our hearts we wish to turn back from our past lives.  You may be confused on how to begin a new life.

 This is what happened in Saul’s (St. Paul) life.  During  his journey of persecuting the followers of Lord,  he found great divinity when he encountered Jesus Christ and he exclaimed, “Of course, my brothers, I really do not think that I have already won it; one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what is ahead.”   He acknowledged that the knowledge of Christ Jesus is more valuable and for its sake, he threw away his fame, success in status, honor and power; and considered it all as mere refuse when he gained the life in Christ. 

In short, he courageously took decision not to continue with the past journey which was full of brutality and atrocities.  He became a born again person.

There arises a question from a repentant heart, ‘Do I need to go to the past pattern of life?’

When you study the life of saints, you can often observe similar questions arising in their past lives too and they sternly took a new and virtuous life with its pain joyfully.  Refer lives of familiar St. Francis of Assisi, St. Augustine, etc. 

Today when you go through this blog you too may come upon similar queries.  There are certain spiritual shores waiting to answer your queries which is the result of some constant and untiring effort of certain hands always behind to lead and guide. 

If there was a time when you were enticed by the world and its passion now is the time to let God’s spirit take charge of you. 

Spiritual hard work and genuine submissiveness are most important for the success of new life.  It is sure that life will be more bright, sanctified and fragrant if spiritually lifted to the heavenly space than the life in dark valleys of the world. 

A true example is the transfiguration of Lord Jesus witnessed by the disciples.   When Lord Jesus was praying on Mount Tabor the disciples saw His face changed its appearance and His clothes became dazzling white.  (Luke 9:28)  There Peter, as if he lost all allurement to pleasures of his life in the valley, exclaimed, “Master, how good it is that we are here.” (Luke 9:33) and he was in a hurry to make tents to be there.

 It echoes - do we really want to go back?  He insists Jesus - Let us be here. 

Such spiritual flights are required in every body’s life – ready to forget the past filthy life and to strive hard, pay the price of sacrifice, to achieve the life that God gifted us.

 Do I need to go back to black magic, gambling, fights, war, bribery, idol worship, witchcraft, immoral life, sexual passions, etc, . What have I gained? Tears of many would be possibly pleading for justice to God against me like Saul’s life.

Let us begin our journey to spirituality seeking the shore of experiencing God in depth.  The Way is Jesus Christ and let your feet be led by the Word of God which is the guiding lamp. 

During your journey of life when you reach the shore of repentance ask yourself, “Do I want to go back to the old self?” 

Let your burning heart take a good and favorable decision of not turning back to our old selves.  It will surely produce the heavenly fragrance of courage.  

May the good God grant you His courage and discernment to walk in the heavenly light and to be the fragrance of Christ Jesus. 

The Holy Bible says, “The hope in Christ does not disappoint us, for God has poured out His love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God’s gift to us.”  (Rom 5:5)

Act for the day

PSALMS 127

IN PRAISE OF GOD’S GOODNESS

If the Lord does not build the house,

The work of the builders is useless;

If the Lord does not protect the city,

it is useless for the sentries to stand guard.

It is useless to work so hard for a living,

getting up early and going to bed late.

For the Lord provides for those he loves,

While they are asleep.

Children are a gift from the Lord;

they are a real blessing.

The sons man has when he is young

are like arrows in a soldier’s hand.

Happy is the man who has many such arrows.

He will never be defeated

when he meets his enemies in the place of judgment.

ACT FOR THE DAY
