PROVERBS 16

We may make our plans, but God has the last word.
You may think everything you do is right, but the Lord judges your motives.
Ask the Lord to bless your plans, and you will be successful in carrying them out.
Everything the Lord has made has its destiny; and the destiny of the wicked is destruction.
The Lord hates everyone who is arrogant; He will never let them escape punishment.

Be loyal and faithful, and God will forgive your sin.  Obey the Lord and nothing evil will happen to you.
When you please the Lord, you can make your enemies into friends.
It is better to have a little, honestly earned, than to have a large income gained dishonestly.
You may make your plans, but God directs your actions.

The king speaks with divine authority; his decisions are always right.
The Lord wants weights and measures to be honest and every sale to be fair.
Kings cannot tolerate evil, because justice is what makes a government strong.
A king wants to hear the truth and will favour those who speak it.
A wise man will try to keep the king happy; if the king becomes angry, someone may die.
The king’s favour is like the clouds that bring rain in the springtime – life is there.

It is better – much better – to have wisdom and knowledge than gold and silver.
Those who are good travel a road that avoids evil; so watch where you are going – it may save your life.
Pride leads to destruction, and arrogance to downfall.
It is better to be humble and stay poor than to be one of the arrogant and get a share of their loot.
Pay attention to what you are taught, and you will be successful; trust in the Lord and you will be happy.

A wise, mature person is known for his understanding.  The more pleasant his words, the more persuasive he is.
Wisdom is a fountain of life to the wise, but trying to educate stupid people is a waste of time.
Intelligent people think before they speak; what they say is then more persuasive.
Kind words are like honey – sweet to the taste and good for your health.
What you think is the right road may lead to death.

A laborer’s appetite makes him work harder, because he wants to satisfy his hunger.
Evil people look for ways to harm others; even their words burn with evil.
Gossip is spread by wicked people; they stir up trouble and break up friendships.
Violent people deceive their friends and lead them to disaster.
Watch out for people who grin and wink at you; they have thought of something evil.

Long life is the reward of the righteous; grey hair is a glorious crown.
It is better to be patient than powerful.  It is better to win control over yourself than over whole cities.
Men cast lots to learn God’s will, but God Himself determines the answer.

May the Lord bless you and take care of you. May He be kind and gracious to you. May the Lord look on you with favour and give you peace.

With love filled blessings,
Your Sister in Christ

THE BOOK OF PROVERBS

CHAPTER 8

IN PRAISE OF WISDOM
Listen! Wisdom is calling out.
Reason is making herself heard.
On the hilltops near the road
and at the cross-roads she stands.
At the entrance to the city,
beside the gates, she calls:
“I appeal to you, mankind;
I call to everyone on earth.
Are you immature? Learn to be mature.
Are you foolish? Learn to have sense.
Listen to my excellent words;
all I tell you is right.
What I say is the truth;
lies are hateful to me.
Everything I say is true;
nothing is false or misleading.
To the man with insight, it is all clear;
to the well-informed, it is all plain.
Choose my instructions instead of silver;
choose knowledge rather than the finest gold.

“I am Wisdom, I am better than jewels;
nothing you want can compare with me.
I am Wisdom, and I have insight;
I have knowledge and sound judgment.
To honor the Lord is to hate evil;.
I hate pride and arrogance,
evil ways and false words.
I make plans and carry them out.
I have understanding, and I am strong.
I help kings to govern and rulers to make good laws.
Every ruler on earth governs with my help,
statesmen and noblemen alike.
I love those who love me;
Whoever looks for me can find me.
I have riches and honor to give,
prosperity and success.
What you get from me is better than the finest gold,
better than the purest silver.
I walk the way of righteousness;
I follow the paths of justice,
giving wealth to those who love me,
filling their houses with treasures.

The Lord created me first of all,
the first of his works, long ago.
I was made in the very beginning,
at the first, before the world began.
I was born before the oceans,
when there were no springs of water.
I was born before the mountains,
before the hills were set in place,
before God made the earth and its fields
or even the first handful of soil.
I was there when He set the sky in place,
when He stretched the horizon across the ocean,
when He placed the clouds in the sky,
when He opened the springs of the ocean
and ordered the waters of the sea
to rise no further than He said.
I was there when He laid the earth’s foundations.
I was beside Him like an architect,
I was His daily source of joy,
always happy in His presence –
happy with the world
and pleased with the human race.

“Now, young men, listen to me.
Do as I say, and you will be happy.
Listen to what you are taught.
Be wise; do not neglect it.
The man who listens to me will be happy -
the man who stays at my door everyday,
waiting at the entrance to my home.
The man who finds me finds life,
and the Lord will be pleased with him.
The man who does not find me, hurts himself;
anyone who hates me loves death.”

THE APPLE OF EYE

My son if you have put up security for your neighbor,
If you have stuck hands in pledge for another,
If you have been trapped by what you said,
Ensnared by the words of your mouth,
Then do this my son, to free yourself,
Since you have fallen into your neighbour’s hands:
Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.
Free yourself like a gazelle from the hands of the hunter,
Like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

Go to the ant you sluggard, consider its ways, and be wise!
It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
How long will you lie there you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest –
and poverty will come on you like bandit,
and scarcity like an armed man.

A scoundrel and villain who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
Who winks with his eye, signals with his feet,
and motions with his fingers,
Who plots evil with deceit in his heart,
He allows stirs up dissension.
Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant,
He will suddenly be destroyed – without remedy.

There are six things the Lord hates,
Seven that are detestable to Him :
Haughty eyes,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devices wicked schemes,
Feet that are quick to rush into evil,
A false witness who calls out lies,
And a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

My son, keep your father’s commands
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
Bind them upon your heart forever,
fasten them around your neck
when you walk they will guide you,
when you sleep they will watch over you,
when you awake they will speak to you.
For this commands are a lamp,
This teaching is a light and
the corrections of discipline are the way to life,
Keeping you from the immoral women,
From the smooth tongue of the wayward wife,
Do not lust in your heart after her beauty,
or let her captivate you with her eyes,
For the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread,
and the adulteress preys upon your very life.

Can a man scoop fire into his lap
without his clothes being burnt?
Can a man walk on hot coals
without his feet being scorched?
So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife,
No one who touches her will go unpunished.

Men do not despise a thief
if he steals to satisfy his hunger, when he is starving.
Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfolds,
though it cost him all the wealth of his house.
But a man who commits adultery, lacks judgment,
Whoever does so destroys himself.

Blows and disgrace are his lot,
and his shame will never be wiped away.
For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury,
And he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
He will not accept any compensation,
He will refuse the bribe, however great it is.

BENEFITS OF WISDOM

Book of Proverbs is probably the most down to earth book in the Holy Bible. The central message of Proverbs applies to anyone, young or old --to gain wisdom at all cost

A Reading from the Book of Proverbs 3:1-35

Don’t forget what I teach you, my son. Always remember what I tell you to do. My teaching will give you a long and prosperous life.

Never let go of loyalty and faithfulness. Tie them round your neck; write them on your heart. If you do this both God and man will be pleased with you.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do and he will show you the right way. Never let yourself think that you are wiser than you are; obey the Lord and refuse to do wrong. If you do, it will be like good medicine healing your wounds and easing your pains.

Honor the Lord by making an offering from the best of all that your land produces. If you do, your barns will be filled with grain, and you will have too much wine to be able to store it all.

When the Lord corrects you, my son, pay close attention and take it as a warning. The Lord corrects those He loves, as a father corrects a son of whom he is proud.

Happy is the man who becomes wise --- who gains understanding. There is more profit in it than there is in silver; it is worth more to you than gold. Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it. Wisdom offers you long life, as well as wealth and honor. Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it. Those who become wise are happy; wisdom will give them life.

The Lord created the earth by His wisdom; by His knowledge He set the sky in place. His wisdom caused the rivers to flow and the clouds to give rain to the earth.

Hold onto your wisdom and insight, my son. Never let them get awayfrom you. They will provide you with life ---a pleasant and happy life.

You can go safely on your way and never even stumble. You will not be afraid when you go to bed, and you will sleep soundly through the night. You will not have to worry about sudden disasters, such as  come on the wicked like a storm. The Lord will keep you safe. He will not let you fall into a trap.

Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. Never tell your neighbor to wait until tomorrow if you can help him now. Don’t plan anything that will hurt your neighbor; he lives beside you trusting you. Don’t argue with someone for no reason when he has never done you any harm. Don’t be jealous of violent people or decide to act as they do, because the Lord hates people who do evil ,but he takes righteous men into His confidence.

The Lord puts a curse on the homes of wicked men, but blesses the homes of the righteous. He has no use for conceited people, but shows favor to those who are humble. Wise men will gain an honorable reputation, but stupid men will only add to their own disgrace.

This is the word of the Lord,

Thanks to be Lord Jesus Christ.
